Kosher Komic

by Judy Silkoff

When it comes to Jewish Comedy, there is none more Jewish than Ayelet.

Billing herself "The Kosher Komic", the twentysomething American is a strictly orthodox woman who performs for female audiences.  She cut her stand-up teeth in mainstream New York comedy clubs, but switched direction after attending Judaism classes four years ago.

"I went because I thought it would be a good place to find a Jewish husband, but ended up with religion instead," she says.  Ayelet realised she could taiulor her routine for orthodox audiences.  Her trademark monologue, "Glatt Kosher Airlines" (collapsible black hats under the seats, and pslam books in the overhead lockers for prayer emergencies), is accompanied on her frum dating, dieting, and of course, mothers.

Actor-manager Rashi Rosensweig stresses that religious audiences are getting top-notch comedy.  "It's not just that she's frum and funny, she's funny in her own right.  She did stand-up in the top clubs in the States and you only get there if you're really good."

Ayelet will be appearing in the strictly orthodox variety show, The Showcase, at London's Logan Hall on June 25.
